Example training "Remote in the couch"
Based on home games described by trainer Cathy Madson (Preventive Vet), start with a simple "find it" and increase difficulty as the dog gains confidence.
- Start: Place Fluo TV on the floor within the dog’s sight. Use the command "search!"; praise and reward when it touches the remote with its nose.
- Gradation: Partially hide the remote under a blanket or behind a table leg. Allow the dog to work independently – shorten the distance if necessary.
- Couch challenge: Tuck the remote between couch cushions (point scent holes outward). Remember that the scent "travels" differently in soft materials – give the dog time to analyze.
- Scent rotation: Change the intensity of Nano+ (turn the ring) or use a new oil sample so the dog doesn’t rely solely on memory.
- New environment: When the dog confidently indicates the remote in the living room, move it to the garden, garage, or office – different air currents will maintain motivation.
Remember short sessions (3-4 searches of 5 minutes each) and long reward play; nosework tires the mind more than an hour-long walk.
