Scent Tile is an innovative tool for training dog scent work. With a dense grid of holes (13 rows of 13 holes each) arranged on a plate measuring 24x24 cm, the Tile is a great tool for learning quick, accurate, and precise scent marking during Nosework training.
The device features holes of various sizes, allowing you to easily adjust the difficulty level of the exercises to the dog's skills. Sample Training – From "Threshold" to "Pin-Pointing"
Inspired by the free e-book “Scent Work 1 – Intro to Scent Work” from Berkeley Humane, which emphasizes the work of threshold search & pin-pointing, we present a sample training scenario with the Scent Tile:
- Stage 1 – easy shot: Place one can with scent (paw hole type) right at the edge of the tile. Introduce the dog on a longer leash, allow them to "fall" into the scent right at the threshold, and immediately reward the self-recovery.
- Stage 2 – deceptive duo: Add a second can with neutral (or another) oil about 2–3 slots away in a straight line. The dog learns to ignore the misleading scent but can still easily find the correct one.
- Stage 3 – scent Sudoku: Distribute three to five cans (one real, the rest deceptive) across the entire board – use micro-holes. Let the dog work independently while you observe the change in behavior and the moment of pin-pointing (the dog "pauses" their nose directly over the hole). The technique described in the "Pinpointing scent" section of the Berkeley Humane pdf emphasizes rewarding exactly at the source of the scent.
- Stage 4 – training in a new environment: According to the “NBN walks” (Nothing But Nosework) guidelines, move the tile to the garden or training cage. Short sessions of 2–3 “hides” build confidence and motivation while not overheating the dog's brain.
As you progress, shorten the time between sessions, train in increasingly challenging locations (e.g., staircases or near random people), and also utilize different wind directions while working outdoors.
