Do you want to introduce your dog to the fascinating world of nosework? Our scent marking learning bowl is a great way to start the adventure of detecting aromas! It features a solid construction made of PETG, which does not absorb odors and is dishwasher safe. The additional rim at the base makes the bowl exceptionally stable and prevents it from tipping over during energetic movements of the dog.
Main advantages:
- ✅ Durability: PETG is more durable and temperature resistant than bowls made from PLA available on the market.
- ♻️ Easy cleaning: The bowl can be safely washed in the dishwasher, ensuring full hygiene.
- ⚖️ Stability: The special rim at the base prevents accidental tipping of the bowl.
- ↗️ Streamlined training: The walls inclined at a 5° angle make it easier to put on and take off the lid from the bowl.
- 🐶 Designed for nosework: Universal sizes allow for working with scent cans with a diameter of 5 cm - e.g. Fluonose Mini or Fluonose Mini+. The bowl is suitable for working with both large dogs and small puppies.
How does working with the scent marking learning bowl look like?
- Choose a scent: Place a scent can with the chosen aroma (e.g. clove, cinnamon, orange peel or a mixture of scents) in the bowl.
- Cover: Put on the lid with holes that allow the aroma to circulate inside the bowl.
- Add treats (optional): At the beginning, toss a few of your dog's favorite treats under the lid. You can do this so that your pet can see where you hide them.
- Give the command “SCENT”: Encourage the dog to reach into the bowl.
- Reward progress: When the dog puts its nose inside, praise it with the word “SUPER” (or another one you use to mark correctly completed tasks) and toss a few treats on the lid to reward the dog.
- Limit treats: Once the dog understands the task, remove the treats from under the lid, leaving only the scent to detect.
- Make the task harder: Place several empty bowls around the room and reward the dog only at the one with the scent to practice its focus and scenting ability.
This approach provides the dog with positive associations with finding the scent, allowing it to learn proper marking more quickly.
Remember that depending on the age, temperament, and focus of the dog, training may often require an individual approach. We highly encourage starting your nosework adventure under the guidance of a specialist who will tailor the training to the specific dog to achieve the fastest progress, making the training a pleasure for the dog rather than a source of frustration.
The design was created in collaboration with Joanna Dąbrowska, an experienced nosework instructor from the renowned school Karpeteam – we train, not discipline.
