Example training – from "threshold" to "pin-pointing"

Inspired by the free e-book “Scent Work 1 – Intro to Scent Work” from Berkeley Humane, which emphasizes the work of threshold search & pin pointing, we present an example training scenario with the Scent Tile:

1. Stage 1 – easy shot: Place one can with a scent (paw-type hole) right at the edge of the tile. Introduce the dog on a long line, let it "fall" into the scent right at the threshold, and immediately reward the self-retrieval.
2. Stage 2 – deceptive duo: Add a second can with a neutral (or different) oil at a distance of 2–3 holes in a straight line. The dog learns to ignore the confusing scent but can still easily find the correct scent.
3. Stage 3 – scent Sudoku: Spread three to five cans (one real, the rest deceptive) across the board – use micro-holes. Allow the dog to work independently while you observe the change in behavior and the moment of pin-pointing (the dog "pauses" its nose directly over the hole). The technique described in the “Pinpointing scent” section of the Berkeley Humane PDF emphasizes rewarding exactly at the source of the scent.
4. Stage 4 – training in a new environment: According to the "NBN walks" (Nothing But Nosework) recommendations, move the tile to the garden or training cage. Short sessions of 2–3 “hides” build confidence and motivation while not overheating the dog's brain.

As you progress, shorten the time between sessions, train in increasingly difficult places (e.g., staircases or near random people), and utilize different wind directions while working outdoors.
