The Accordion Scent Strip is a folding scent strip for nosework based on a scissor mechanism – it extends to an impressive length of 2.25 m in a matter of seconds, and when folded, fits easily into a training bag. Each joint where the arms connect features a slot for a Fluonose Nano+ scent can. Sets can be linked together, so the number of scent points can be increased as desired.
The accordion turned out to have a few flaws, but we couldn’t bear to throw it away, so it ended up at auction :)

If you take nosework seriously, you’ll know how annoying it is to have to set out several separate containers before each session – one here, another there, a cap has come loose, a tin has fallen out. The accordion scent strip solves this problem once and for all. It is a folding scent strip on a scissor mechanism that unfolds to its full length of 2.25 m in a single movement – instead of a mess, you have a ready-to-use detection set in a matter of seconds.
Thanks to magnets built into their bases, the Fluonose Nano+ scent canisters stay securely in their sockets without the risk of accidentally falling out.
The accordion scent strip is so intuitive to use that you can start your first exercise literally a minute after taking it out of the bag. Grab both ends, pull it out – and you’re ready to go. The scissor mechanism (the same one you’ll recognise from car jacks or folding stands) keeps the shape stable in any position. After your session, you fold it back into a flat shape and it goes straight into the bottom of your training bag. No separate containers to collect things in, no fiddly arranging. One accessory – a complete set for your scent series.
At each junction – where the arms cross – there’s an oval slot for the Fluonose Nano+ scent can. The can fits securely into the holder and doesn’t fall out whilst the dog is working – even if your four-legged friend presses its nose against the slot with great enthusiasm. 🐾
Fluonose Nano+ scent cans fit into the accordion scent strip sockets – compact containers with a built-in magnet and ventilation holes that allow the scent to be gently released into the air. It is precisely this controlled, concentrated stream of scent that means the dog really has to work its nose to locate the source – rather than sniffing a diffuse cloud along the entire length of the strip.
You can also use the scent strips without the cartridges – simply place a scent sample directly into the slot.
The cans are sold separately. They are empty – you can place any scent sample inside them: natural (a piece of bark, a clove) or on a carrier (a cotton wool ball soaked in essential oil). The accordion scent strip is sold without cartridges, but you can add them to your order directly from the product page.
This 2.25-metre-long accordion-style tracking line is an excellent challenge for advanced teams. A line of this length provides the dog with a clear, long linear track featuring numerous knots to search. Hanging from a fence or leaning against a wall, it perfectly simulates a vertical search similar to what dogs face in more demanding field exercises.
And what if even 2.25 metres isn’t enough? The ‘Accordion’ scent strips can be connected together – if you buy another one in the future, you can easily clip it onto this one, creating a scent strip of infinite length. Ideal for advanced exercises with multiple samples or for group work during scent detection training.
Below, we describe three stages of working with the scent strip – from an introductory session to advanced selection exercises. The scenarios are based on tried-and-tested methods for working with a series of containers, as used by scent detection trainers.
Lay out the accordion scent strip on the floor and place a scent sample in one compartment (warm), leaving the others empty (cold). Give the dog the ‘search’ command and let it walk along the strip on its own. When it stops at the warm bay and marks it, reward it immediately. Repeat several times, changing the position of the warm bay each time. The dog quickly learns that it is the scent that matters, not the position on the track.
Once the dog is confidently identifying the warm nest in a row of empty ones, it’s time to add a challenge. Place tins containing a decoy scent (a scent other than the target scent) or a strong-smelling distraction (e.g. a piece of a treat in a sealed container) into two or three of the cold nests. One nest remains ‘warm’ with the target sample. This exercise is excellent for training olfactory selectivity – the dog must ignore tempting scents and indicate exactly the right one. A classic exercise used by detection trainers during competition preparation.
Hang the accordion scent strip on a fence mesh or lean it vertically against a wall. Place the sample in one of the compartments – this time at different heights in subsequent repetitions. Working on a vertical bar presents a completely different challenge for the dog than horizontal searching – the scent travels differently, and the dog must actively search for the source along the entire surface. A great exercise to prepare for vertical searches both outdoors and indoors (walls, furniture, fences).
Remember the golden rule of nosework: sockets that have contained scent samples (warm) never become cold. The ‘Harmonijka’ makes this easier to organise – after a session, you remove the tins from the slots and store them separately from the strip. The strip itself is cold and ready for the next training session without any risk of scent contamination.
