Example training using the Scent Carousel:
1️⃣ Preparation for training:
- Place the scent that the dog is to search for in the scent can Fluonose Mini+ (e.g., orange peel, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, or another scent from the Nosework set). To start your Nosework adventure, you can also place some of the dog's favorite treats in the can to encourage them to act.
- Place the scent can in one of the baskets in the carousel.
- Allow the dog to calmly approach the turned-off carousel to familiarize themselves with the device – let them sniff the baskets and see that it is safe.
2️⃣ First stage of training – scent in a static environment:
- When the dog sniffs out the scent in the can, immediately give a command indicating correct task completion (e.g., "bingo!") and reward the dog with their favorite treats.
- Repeat this exercise until the dog understands that their task is to find the scent in one of the baskets.
3️⃣ Second stage of training – scent in motion:
- Gently set the carousel in motion by rotating it with your hand. The dog will have to find the scent in motion, increasing the difficulty of the task.
- If the dog finds the scent and puts their nose in the basket, stop the carousel to allow the dog to accurately mark the scent.
- Reward the dog each time to maintain their engagement.
4️⃣ Third stage of training – increasing difficulty:
- Rotate the carousel faster so the dog has to work harder with their nose.
- You can stop and restart the carousel to help the dog focus on the changing environment.
- By changing the height of the arms (one basket low, the other high), you encourage the dog to work in different planes.
5️⃣ Advanced training – changing scents and baskets:
- Place several scent cans in different baskets – one with the correct scent, others neutral or with a misleading scent. The dog must choose the correct basket.
- Introduce new scents to make the training even more challenging and developmental for the dog.
